What is Pinball Publishing?
Pinball is a Creative Publishing Company.
Our Portland, Oregon headquarters include an integrated printing plant, design studio, editorial offices, and a book manufacturing facility. Within its walls, we combine craft and ingenuity to produce results of the highest quality.
Fueled by a passion for ink, paper, and collaboration, Pinball powers a growing web of interconnected projects, including Scout Books, Print Pinball, and Bangback. With all of these endeavors, we use 100% recycled papers, vegetable-based inks, and renewable energy sources.
Over the past decade, we’ve had the pleasure of working with hundreds of amazing people and businesses all over the world, and logged thousands of hours producing our library of projects.

Seeds on Hard Ground
Seeds on Hard Ground: A Chapbook by Tom Waits. (Yes, that Tom Waits.)
Seeds on Hard Ground was inspired by Michael O’Brien’s photographs of the homeless. Designed by Johnny Brewton of X-Ray Book Co., carefully crafted by Pinball and expertly released by the team at Anti-Records, this chapbook’s sales raised nearly $90,000 in assistance for the homeless.
The chapbooks are completely sold out, but you can read a re-arranged version of the poem alongside O’Brien’s portraits in his book Hard Ground.
Good Ink: American Shorts
GOOD INK is the new book imprint of Scout Books; a unique publishing venture designed to create new opportunities for contemporary artists, connect with our literary and publishing history, and showcase the power of the Scout Book format.
Our inaugural series, American Shorts, mines 100 years of the U.S.A.’s literary canon of immortal short stories, from the horrific (“The Fall of the House of Usher”) to the heartwarming (“The Gift of the Magi”), with many stops along the way. Each 32-page volume of the 10-part American Shorts series will pair a classic American author with a modern illustrator, creating a unique artistic collaboration across the years. The books will be released in limited edition, published twice a month from September-December 2011, culminating in a special boxed set release in time for the holidays. A perfect fit for literature lovers, design connoisseurs, or just about anyone who could use a great book for their pocket.
