For those of you with a weekday to spare and a keen interest in statistics, information architecture, tables, graphs, topography, perception, and the endless ways in which graphic information can be rendered beautiful, be sure to enroll in Edward Tufte’s 1-day course in “Presenting Data and Information,” scheduled for July 16th at the Portland Art Museum. The $380 price tag may make a dent in your pocketbook, but you’ll walk away with all four of Tufte’s self-published and award-winning books on information design, and an afternoon well-spent with the “Galileo of graphics” himself. Google image search “Chipboard Paper Manufacturing” and you will find that our Tenth & Grant notebooks made it in the Top Ten! This is most likely due to our fantastic relationship with chipboard. Coming in at #9 is Sonoco, our chipboard mill. Congrats Sonoco. Chipboard is 100% post-consumer waste, recycled from cardboard boxes and grocery bags, and has a lovely kraft color. It’s also super economical!

Here’s a palette of the past twenty ink colors used on press at Pinball. Vibrant hues of purple, green and red are paired with pastel cousins, and neutral blacks and browns round out the scheme. Quite fetching, don’t you think?
For more inspiration, check out colourlovers.com, a Portland-based (and Pinball print client!) website for exploring color trends and creating color conversations. They were recently included in Time’s 50 best websites of 2008.

We recently had the pleasure of printing these dapper “True Confessions” chapbooks for legendary balladeer and musical iconoclast Tom Waits. Designed by X-Ray Book Company’s Johnny Brewton—also known for his design of Waits’ Orphans 3-CD box set as well as publishing projects for Charles Bukowski, Hunter S. Thompson, and Billy Childish—these 20-page + cover pocket-sized booklets feature Tom Waits in conversation with none other them himself, in a charming self-interview that asks of Waits everything from “What are some unusual things that have been left behind in a cloakroom?” to “What’s wrong with the world?”.

Flaunting sturdy chipboard covers and French Dur-o-tone Newsprint interiors, the booklets were printed in an edition of 5,000 copies and will be available at venues around the globe as part of Waits’ upcoming Glitter and Doom Tour. Check out this site for tour dates!

We are super excited that the Public Design Center, currently stationed in Starkville, MS, is planning a move to Portland in the very near future. PDC co-founders Kate Bingaman-Burt of Obsessive Consumption notoriety and her husband Clifton Burt are set to move this summer, as Kate gears up for a teaching position in the graphic design program at PSU.
From the PDC website:
“The PDC is a graphic design resource center. Our work includes print design and web development. To that end, we engage in capacity-building, research, classification, and exhibition.”
In the past, the PDC has also offered design workshops at the jaw-dropping price of $15/session. Learning about baselines and bezier curves has never been so affordable!
Be sure to check out their Flickr page for photos of their beautiful work space.
