Happy Almost Fourth of July: Poster Praise for Lester Beall

Written on July 2, 2008 by Laura Whipple

Rural Electrification Administration Poster by Lester Beall (1934).

In honor of our country’s birthday bash this Friday, I wanted to share my favorite modernist Americana poster of all time. This poster is part of a series that Lester Beall designed for the U.S Government’s Rural Electrification projects in the 1930’s. The poster’s use of bold stripes and a silhouetted photograph represents two of Beall’s signature techniques. I think it’s simply brilliant and would love to see this beautiful piece of oversized American propaganda (30″ X 40″ silkscreened!) in person someday.
