Jason & Jordan of enormouschampion

Pinball has enormous love for enormouschampion, a talented husband and wife duo based in Brooklyn, New York. Turning one this May, enormouschampion has accomplished a year of amazing greeting cards, awe inspiring posters, and music packaging design to wow the eyes. You can see a plethora of their beautiful goods in their etsy store. EC’s mesmerizing designs have graced the Pinball press a number of times and recently we had the chance to pick their brains. For more on this super couple please read on!

enormouschampion, brilliant name! Where did it come from? And how did you get started?

Jason: Our first project together was album art for a band from England called Seafood. Knowing that one of us was a photographer and the other a designer, they were looking for a complete New York experience, so in addition to recording in Brooklyn, they asked us to do the art for the album and singles. On the last night of the band’s recording stay in NYC, we were asked how we wanted to be credited. On the spot, we came up with enormouschampion, which everyone agreed was the perfect moniker for our collaborative effort.

What is your design background? Any secret interests or specialties that we may not know about?

Jordan: Not knowing that design was a profession, Jason told his high school art teacher that all he wanted to do was make record covers, posters, and skateboard graphics….. Mrs. Stern guided him in the right direction. Needless to say, Jason went to art school for Graphic Design. I studied photography and anthropology at university, and always had a passion for fabrics and patterns. some other random details: Jason used to be a freestyle skateboarder and is obsessed with Lego. I have an eternal love for animals and dig all things water related.

2/0  Offset printed A2 Folding Cards + letterpress embossing

I know that you often finish your custom notecards that we print here with your letterpress. Can you tell us a little bit about your experience as a press operator and if so, how it effects your work as a designer?

Jordan: We both come up with design ideas, but Jason executes them…. We allow the designs to dictate the printing methods. As I do all of the printing, it took a little while for me to translate to him what works and what doesn’t as far as letterpress goes, and get him to think along those lines when drawing stuff.  Jason has definitely gotten better designing things for letterpress…. I have been printing for about 9 years.

Any upcoming events or releases we should know about?

Jason: We’ll be at the National Stationery Show in May, for our second year where we’ll be debuting some new products….wooden animal silhouettes that were previewed last year, tea towels and new card designs. In June, we also have a booth at the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn.

How do you see enormouschampion sustaining its momentum in 2009, considering the economy? Are there any practices you are implementing to keep your company viable? Advice for the stationery artists?

Jordan: We are only a year old with our training wheels still on… because we are so new, this is the only economy we’ve experienced… We’re hopeful that by creating things that we are passionate about, we will continue building momentum despite the economy. For us, we love stationery, but it is also a good gateway into developing other products. Stationery has a flexible enough canvas to experiment on and allows for small run productions, depending on one’s process, so we think that it’s one of the most fun and easier small businesses to get started in.

Favorite mediums?

Ink and paper, typography, photography, banjos and ramen.

Anything else you would like to add?

Jason: This venture has allowed us to meet some of our favorite people and we are truly grateful for that. Onwards.
